Phillip H. Sheridan and his staff

Union cavalry commander General Philip H. Sheridan is seen in this photograph (second from left) with members of his staff. From left to right are generals Wesley Merritt, Sheridan, George Crook, George A. Forsyth, and George A. Custer. These men provided the corp’s leadership for Grant’s cavalry during the last year of the war in Virginia. Sheridan and his staff were highly successful in thwarting enemy movements in the Shenandoah Valley in the fall of 1864.
