Improvised Confederate covers
|
As the war dragged on for four years, such basic
household commodities as salt, paper, and stationary
became scarce in the South. These handmade covers
from South Carolina reflect the resourcefulness
of citizens trying to cope with shortages. The envelope
at the top, postmarked Bennettsville,
was made from ledger paper, and the bottom cover,
postmarked Georgetown, was made from
wallpaper. |
