Bill of sale for a slave from Cumberland, Kentucky, 1845


Know all men by these presents, that I Stephen Cooke of Cumberland County, have this day sold to James E. Cooke, my negro man John for the sum of five hundred and fifty dollars, payment of which I hereby acknowledge to have been made to me, that is to say, by payment to [illegible] Anderson, the sum of $395.32 in satisfaction of a debt owed to him, and the sum of $154.68, to Dr. John Spencer in past payment of a debt I owe to him. The right and title to the said negro man John, I hereby warrant and will forever defend to the said James E. Cooke by these presents. Witness my hand and seal this 23 day of Jany. 1845 Stephen Cooke
