U.S. national flag

This thirty-five-star U.S. national flag has a star pattern of five rows of seven. The thirty-fifth star, representing the state of West Virginia, was added to the flag on July 4, 1863. Even so, many thirty-four-star flags remained in service until the end of the Civil War. Because President Lincoln did not recognize the seccession of the Confederate States from the Union, the stars representing those states were not removed.
