he National Portrait Gallery houses the vast majority of Civil War-era portraiture within the Smithsonian. Its collection of more than five hundred images is an array of historic personalities represented in every significant artistic medium of the period, including paintings, sculpture, prints, and photographs. Such legendary figures as Abraham Lincoln, Ulysses S. Grant, Robert E. Lee, and Stonewall Jackson are among the gallery's best-represented subjects. In addition to the selections presented here, portraits of historic figures can be seen throughout this Web site in subject categories where they relate.
