John Brown Brought Out for Execution

Albert Berghaus was a sketch artist for Frank Leslie’s Illustrated Newspaper when he made this pencil drawing of the moment John Brown was brought out of the jail in Charles Town, Virginia, December 2, 1859, to be conveyed in a furniture wagon to the place of execution. This sketch appeared as a wood block engraving in Leslie’s newspaper on December 17.
