Surgical kit

This Civil War–era surgical kit was manufactured by J. H. Gemrig, 109 South 8th Street, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Gemrig was a surgical instrument maker from 1840 to 1881. During the Civil War, Gemrig was one of the suppliers of surgical sets under contract to the Union forces. This kit belonged to Dr. Charles C. Lee, an assistant surgeon with the 1st Maryland Volunteer Cavalry, 1861–1862, and a contract surgeon for the U.S. Army, 1862–1865. The name “Dr. C. C. Lee” is engraved on a brass plate mounted on the lid of the box.
